This series was inspired by writing, particularly the principle that it can be more powerful to convey an idea without saying it directly. I’ve painted lots of waves. They never get old for me, but I wanted to explore the idea of suggesting the presence of waves by the subtle contour shifts and cast-shadows in the water that precedes the wave itself. In other words, to convey the idea of a wave, or just INSINUATE it, without saying it directly.
