Well, yes, it’s the official state fish of California. I’m not sure why a state need’s an official fish, but I can tell you that the bright red/orange garibaldi was named for the red/orange vests worn by the Redshirts led by Giuseppe Garibaldi as he fought for, and achieved, the unification of northern and southern Italy.
