I did. I came across a “reader contest” in Surfing Magazine some years ago with a challenge to illustrate the worst wipeout we could imagine. At first I dismissed it, thinking surely some kid would create some bloody dry reef impaling, like a heavy metal album cover with severed goat’s heads all over the beach. How would I compete with that? Then a few days later this idea came to me, to use a long canvas to accentuate a deep hold down. Simple concept, kinda classy. It won, and they hooked me up. (I’m guessing nobody sent in the illustration I described above, or I still think it would have won.)
