GENERAL
Sometimes I paint... a lot.
But seriously, we try to make most of my work (especially the California Coast paintings) available because we find that quite often it's the painting of an obscure and off-the-beaten-path location that happens to hold deep personal meaning for the viewer. It might be the site of a marriage proposal, or a loved one's scattered ashes, or simply a favorite place to watch a sunset- no matter what the reason, we're stoked to offer these paintings for your enjoyment here.
First, thank you for all you're doing to make the world better through the work of whichever nonprofit you're involved with. I do a lot of fund-raising for many different groups, preferring to show up and paint live at events whenever it makes sense. It's entertaining for the audience, and it gives me a chance to be more than just a piece of art at the event. That said, it's a lot of effort and sometimes I just get stretched thin, so I generally ask to split the proceeds from the art sale with nonprofit 50/50. This keeps me from burning out, motivates me to dig deep, and by doing so has allowed me to create some great work at live events and raise well over fifty thousand dollars among various nonprofits through the years. I can't promise your event will be a good fit for me, and sometimes I still just get stretched thin, but it never hurts to ask. Shoot me a line and let's talk.
Not at this time, but here are two suggestions that might be helpful:
- If I have any existing images that would work for your needs, we can discuss the possibility of usage.
- I can refer you to my friend Noah Samson at VISUAL CONCEPTS in Arcata. He's a nice fellow and does great work, and he can handle all of your business printing needs as well.
This shouldn't be in the FAQ, but I don't have a RAQ (rarely asked questions) page, so if you're here asking this you have our sincere apologies. It's no fun looking forward to a meaningful new piece of art for your home, only to find it was clobbered during shipping. It can happen. But after years of sending art literally all over the world, we can honestly say this is unusual. We take a lot of care to pack our paintings, prints and other items well. But here's the next steps if you do find yourself in this situation:
Start with sending us an email through our contact form here, and let us know about the situation, including the order number, and any other info we need to know.
Then we'll get back to you asap and most likely we will request some photos so go ahead and snap these so you're ready when we ask for them:
1. Photos of the box/packaging if there was any visible damage, so we can file a claim with the shipping company. Don't wait, because they generally have a pretty narrow window of time they're willing to deal with these claims.
2. Photos of the damaged artwork/product itself. These will be critical if the box wasn't damaged, it's very rare, but possible that the printers didn't catch an issue before shipping or accidentally caused some damage during the packing process itself. Not likely, but possible since humans were involved in every step of the process.
-
- After we have the photos and all the necessary information, we'll take care of the rest. We want you to be stoked.
All that said, we can't be responsible for damage incurred while unpacking the art/order, so take good care when doing so. I once stabbed my best friend in the finger with a knife because a bee landed on my hand while cutting some cucumber or cheese or something while camping and I waved the bee off frantically while the knife was still in my hand. Boy scout fail. So yeah, be careful out there!
ARTWORK
If you're asking this here, you already know it's not easy. There's generally 3 ways to do so.
- Check my page of available originals HERE. If anything there is calling your name the best way to go is to send us an inquiry by going through the checkout process for that painting. There will be no charge, but it will let us know which piece you're interested in, as well as ensure we have the right contact info, and give as an idea of where you are for shipping purposes as well. We'll get back to you right away and we will sort out the details from there.
- Sign up for our WATER'S EDGE email list, and get emails to notify you of new available originals as we post them so you'll get first dibs, often with early-bird discounts too.
- Or if you know just want you want, (and especially if what you want is a painting of a particular location the California coast that I haven't painted yet), drop us a line HERE, and let's start that conversation.
Whether its an original painting or any of our archival prints, your art is made to last. But nothing is forever so to ensure the longest and most vibrant lifespan possible here's our advice;
- Artwork can be wiped clean with a slightly damp microfiber cloth.
- Artwork should be kept out of direct sunlight as much as possible as the UV rays may cause certain colors and media to slightly change over time. Fluorescent lights can also be detrimental and should be avoided if possible. LED's and incandescents are preferred.
No, but I strongly prefer to work that way. On location I can watch the waves and the birds, hear the rumbling ocean, breath the cool fresh air, and generally feel the fullness of life on the face of this earth.
In my studio which is just a glorified garage, it is lonely and sometimes cold, and it smells a little like gasoline and burnt rubber.
That said, I often start my paintings outdoors (in plein air), composing the scene and laying in the foundational sketches of a painting which serve as a map to complete the finished work in the studio. Sometimes it's just a few extra strokes or pops of color, other times it might be an extended session or two.
Plein Air is just the artworld term* for a painting that was painted outdoors using the landscape itself as the reference material being painted, as opposed to a painting made entirely in a studio using photographs, memories, or anything else for reference material.
It's a bucket of fun.
Until the wind blows it all over the side of a cliff. Then it's not quite as fun.
*Artworld terms always seem to be French translations of mundane descriptions. "En plein air" literally means "outdoors" or "in the open air". But it's fancier in French. Even crazier is the word "giclee" which takes on all kinds of pretentious meanings in the artworld, but literally means "sprayed ink" as in inkjet printing. It seems back when inkjet print technology became advanced enough to create art reproductions there was some concern about using the term "inkjet" in the high art world, so "giclee" became the substitute and eventually took on it's own meaning of higher quality prints, which are still technically inkjet prints. So there you go.
FINE ART PRINTS
Check out or FINE ART PRINT OPTIONS page for more info on the types of prints we offer, inks used, etc.
Yes.
Our Fine Art Prints on canvas or paper are printed on archival materials with pigment inks rated to last longer than any of us will live.
But that said. Giclée is just a french word for sprayed ink, coined to obscure the fact that inkjet printers had become advanced enough to print art-reproduction quality prints. Using a french word like giclée felt fancier for the artworld.
We don't use the term ourselves because modern printing has come so far there's no need to obfuscate the matter with unfamiliar words, in fact we even list the specific printers and inks used where we can.
