San Diego, it’s a conquest by the sea. The name itself derived from the Spanish “Santiago”, which means Saint James, and the name James is derived from the Hebrew Jacob, which means “the usurper”, or “conqueror”. It’s an unfortunately appropriate wordplay considering this was the site of the first European settlement in California dating back to 1769 when Spain began it’s northward march up the coast and the consequent subjugation of her native peoples that were thriving in the oasis of southern California’s beautiful coastline, warm climate and abundant fish tacos. Pass the guacamole.
