It is thought that Sir Francis Drake claimed this part of California for England as far back as 1650, dubbing it Nova Albion (Latin for New England- long before New England was even called New England). The powers that be in England thought it was too far out of the way and never really followed up on the claim. And if you’ve ever tried to visit the Marin coastline, you know they had a good point. Seems like almost everywhere you want to go on this coast requires a long complicated detour off Highway One just to see the ocean (and half the time the sign for the roads have been removed by secretive locals protecting their quiet towns from the hoards of unwashed tourists). But then again it’s worth the effort every time… Your loss, England.
