San Mateo

Originally part of San Francisco County, one of the state’s original 18 counties, San Mateo was formed in 1856, basically splitting the big city of San Francisco off into its own city/county and leaving the rural south-lands to their own governance under the San Mateo moniker. Even today the area is defined by it’s proximity to The City to the north, giving it the feeling of being the big expansive backyard to the house of SF, and the further south you go away from the house, the wilder it gets until at last you can no longer tell where the property ends and the wilderness begins.
