San Luis Obispo

This county of rolling hills and quiet country beauty was named after the rightful heir to the kingdom of Spain who (after a stint in captivity in Italy) forsook his claim to the crown and instead took the Franciscan vows and became a monk, then a Bishop, then was later crowned a Saint- or Saint Luis the Bishop- San Luis Obispo. Fast forward a few hundred years and his Italian dairy farmer friends moved to California, raised cattle on these very hills, and produced so much milk they didn’t know what to do with it until the advent of industrial kitchens that could produce enough donuts and cookies to go along with it all.
