The Monterey coast, with it’s mountains plunging into the sea in the Big Sur area is known all over the world for it’s unmatched natural beauty. Monterey Bay itself was known of long before San Francisco and in spite of San Francisco Bay’s disovery in 1969, Monterey became the capital of Alta and Baja Californias in 1777 and remained there for quite some time. Well, there was that brief 6 day period where the sneaky Argentinians busted into the fort in 1818 and burned down the governor’s house and stole his cattle, but that’s another story… I don’t want to give the ending away, but I have heard they took one look at the Big Sur coast and immediately became so focused on taking selfies at all the highway turnouts that they were distracted when the Spaniards finally launched their defensive counter-attack.
